Associate Director or Director of Protein Engineering – Well funded Gene Therapy startup

My client is an exciting and rapidly growing gene therapy startup at the forefront of innovation located in the South San Francisco who are currently undergoing an expansion due to recently securing a significant series A funding round. They are committed to revolutionizing the treatment landscape for genetic disorders and are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join their team as the to lead their Protein Engineering activities at a Associate Director or Director level.

As the head of Protein Engineering, you will play a critical role in driving innovation, leading a team of scientists and research associates, and contributing to the advancement of our pipeline of protein-based therapeutics and diagnostics.

Responsibilities:
 
  • Lead and manage a team of scientists and research associates specializing in protein engineering, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to achieve project goals and objectives.
  • Design, evaluate, and implement protein-engineering strategies to optimize protein expression, stability, and multiple enzymatic functions in support of various therapeutic applications.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other research and development teams to integrate protein-engineering efforts into overall project plans and timelines.
  • Contribute to intellectual property generation through the design and execution of innovative protein-engineering experiments and studies.
  • Present research findings, project updates, and scientific insights to internal stakeholders, external collaborators, and scientific conferences.

Qualifications:
 
  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Protein Engineering, Structural Biology or a related field.
  • Minimum of ten years of post-graduate experience in protein engineering, with a proven track record of success in designing and engineering proteins for therapeutic applications.
  • Strong expertise in protein structure-function relationships and characterization techniques.
  • Experience managing and leading scientific teams, with demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in protein design software, molecular modeling tools, and protein expression.
  • A history of engineering polymerases, endonucleases, and/or zinc-finger (or other) DNA-binding proteins
  • Track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or intellectual property generation in the field of protein engineering.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, and dynamic work environment
